The U-Turn
We hear the same old negative messages over and over. The same negative words spoken by the same people that believe that things are hopeless. That there is no light at the end of the tunnel…
But things could not be further from the truth – hope is not lost !!
With the dawn of a new era in the 90-year-old history of the Veekraal plotted community (a community of about 117 small holding stands), 2026 has become the year to completely redesign the very soul of the awesome community who is living in this idyllic enclave on the northern border of the Freestate. In reality, Veekraal is nothing less than a micro-cosmos where people are true neighbours for one another and that are united in a common vision of a prosperous future.
Turning an entire community around is not a trivial matter – it is a hard goal that requires true commitment from the ranks of the diverse citizenship that is Veekraal. To turn this community around is not merely a vague objective anymore. With the results starting to come in, we can now say with certainty and confidence that we are seeing the early signs of a successful implementation of our master plan through disciplined execution by people that refuse to resign themselves to negativity.
To summarise some of the most important goals that were achieved to date, please reflect on the following:
- Security: With the establishment of a security committee, a dozen CCTV cameras have been deployed in key locations that are constantly being monitored. These cameras assist both as a deterrent, rapid mobilisation to counteract imminent threats as well as bringing bad actors to justice.
The result of these efforts has resulted in a 60% reduction in theft in the Veekraal area in less than six months, while more cameras are soon the be added to surveillance network.
- Funding: The active canvassing for community-based funding has been a great success. With the demonstration of enhancements in the Veekraal infrastructure, it was an easy matter to increase the contribution rate by more than 100% to date. Although the ultimate objective has not yet been reached, further contributions have already been pledged and the community is already receiving the benefit of improvements being implemented with greater speed.
- Roads: In a region plagued by the decay of road systems, Veekraal also suffers from the constant burden of road upkeep. However, with more funding becoming available, the road system in Veekraal is rapidly being stabilised and upgraded. With the recent innovation of opening a quarry within the area of Veekraal, the restrictions on maintenance materials have largely been mitigated – ushering in a new era of road enhancement that was impossible until recently.
- Non-profit registration: Nothing can flourish in total isolation, and Veekraal cannot prosper as an island community. The entire area wherein Veekraal finds itself is suffering from the ills of an economic slow-down facing large parts of South Africa. The necessity to change the viewpoint from merely enhancing Veekraal, to one where the larger region needs to also derive benefit from the fact that Veekraal is embedded within the greater Vaal triangle, is now fully recognised.
Veekraal has already completed its registration as an NPC, and is already working towards the next step of converting it to a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO). This has been done to benefit the region by stimulating the local economy through the introduction and subsequent development of business premises inside Veekraal, to promote trade and build an economically active community.
But investment in the human constituents of our local society is desperately needed. Therefore, Veekraal is actively pursuing the development of a skills development centre inside our community boundary, with the intent to equip residents from Veekraal and surrounding areas with the skills needed to become economically active and enhance their earning ability – thus investing in the future of our region. - Outreach: The difficulties of local support structures in the direct vicinity of Veekraal could not remain at the level of desperation that became prevalent in recent years. Veekraal has actively started to support the South African Police Services at Deneysville, whereby police vehicles were restored to a working condition – adding an additional two vehicles to the local police fleet. Working with local authorities to better the surrounding areas have now become an active focus area for the Veekraal representative body.
As a soon fully fledged NPO, Veekraal is extending an open invitation to like minded persons and businesses alike, who also believe that hope is not lost.
